Listening to One’s Self: An Innovative Approach to Studying the Free Associative Process

Free association isn’t an aimless wandering — it is driven by the yearning of new and unformulated thoughts to be put into a structure that resonates with the inner experience of the self. This drive for synchrony — to fit our sense of who we are with new thoughts, feelings, and memories — is a restless passion; there is nothing neutral or passive about it. Mr. Geralis recorded, documented, and thoroughly and ingeniously analyzed his supervisory sessions in order to try to make sense of a process (writing his masters thesis) that seemed at first to be a voyage with no land in sight.

Antony Geralis, BM, MA, musical director, conductor, and pianist for Broadway shows, is an NYGSP graduate. His masters thesis, which this presentation is based on, was the winner of NAAP’s 2015 Gradiva Award for Student Paper.
