New Ideas in the Speech of 14 Psychoanalytic Patients Download Flyer
by Dan Gilhooley, PsyaD; Robert Hempel, MA; and Maria Huffman, MFA

Using a tool piloted in their PT171 Systematic Investigations class, Dr Dan Gilhooley and CMPS students Maria Huffman and Robert Hempel identified 300 new ideas occuring in the speech of 14 analytic patients. Looking at the contexts within which these ideas emerged, they found that 80% of new ideas were born during states of relative mental disorganization and discomfort, after which patients invariably shifted attention to their pasts. Dr Gilhooley will discuss their findings in terms of primary process and creativity, while Ms Huffman and Mr Hempel will describe how doing this research has contributed to their training to become psychoanalysts.

(In September 2008 Dr Gilhooley presented their work at the annual North American Society for Psychotherapy Research Conference at Yale University.)
