BLOOMSBURY “FAMILY VALUES”:
Circles of Trust in the Life and Work of Virginia Woolf
Dr. Mills explores Virginia Woolf’s complex relationship to the notion of “family”
in her novels and life-writings through the lens of classical anthropologist Jane Ellen
Harrison, who was an early reader and advocate of Sigmund Freud’s work.
Jean Mills, PhD, specializes in Virginia Woolf, Modernism, biography, and women
writers of the 1920’s -30’s and is working on a book on Woolf and Jane Ellen Harrison.

“MRS KLEIN”: A Dramatic Reading
The play written by Nicholas Wright, centers on the stormy conflict among
Melanie Klein, her daughter Melitta Schmideberg, and Paula Heiman, at the time
of Melitta's brother’s death. The performance is edited and directed by Sam
Schacht and performed by New York-based professional actors.
Sam Schacht, MA, producer, theater academic, and former Dean of the Actors Studio
Drama School at the New School University, teaches at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting.

FEELINGS IN COLOR
Renée Rosenthal talks about her painting series “Feelings
in Color,” inspired by emotional states. Her presentation
of a triptych based on Beethoven’s Pathétique Sonata
is accompanied by Paul Sheftel who performs excerpts.
Renée Rosenthal won the NAAP 2007 Gradiva Award in
art for “Feelings in Color”.

MUSIC & THE EMOTIONS: An Exploration
What is the hypnotic component in music that causes intense, extreme
and contrasting feelings? Paul Sheftel performs some of Mozart’s piano
music and invites the audience to consider the question with him.
Paul Sheftel is a pianist, teacher, and workshop leader, and author of
more than fifty publications. He is on the faculty of the Juilliard School of Music.
