Lynn Laub, PsyD, “Affective Attunement and Cognitive Understanding”

A degree of emotional attunement and cognitive understanding is exercised to strengthen weak structures and to modify those which interfere with maturation. Intervention is geared to these ends. This is the necessary ingredient to provide the proper dosage of communication, which is the art of psychoanalysis. Clinical vignettes illustrate this technique.

Dan Gilhooley, PsyaD, “Mistakes”

Mistakes go deep into the heart of clinical practice. A study of clinical mistakes touches on several controversial issues of technique: analytic authority, neutrality, self- disclosure, spontaneity, apology, transference/countertransference issues, and therapeutic alliance. Clinical vignettes support the idea that creatively used mistakes can
focus and improve treatment.

Robert Quackenbush, PhD, “The Use of Psychoanalytic Techniques with Children and Adolescents”

Children communicate in symbolic language through writings, drawings, dreams and fantasy. For children, fantasy is a defense against terror. Using the techniques of Winnicott and Spotnitz, Dr. Quackenbush presents cases which demonstrate how by understanding symbolic communication and helping children put their thoughts and feelings into words, emotional blocks are resolved.
