ART AND THE MOTHER’S FACE:
EARLY GRANDIOSITY AND BEYOND
Winnicott believed that the mother had to do more than care for her infant;
she had to make sure that reality was in keeping with the child’s feeling of
omnipotence. How does this early need for magic affect our creative lives?
Can we fuse our fantasies and the world’s reality to create something new?
Should psychoanalysis help us increase our grandiosity or subdue it?
MONDAYS: June 14th, 21st 7:00–8:30 PM $90

BEYOND COUNTERTRANSFERENCE: WHAT DOES THE ANALYST REALLY THINK?
Who is that behind the couch? What is the analyst really thinking? This workshop explores the experience of the analyst through writings by, and about, psychoanalysts. Using letters, memoirs, and festshrifts, we become familiar with the private thoughts of Freud, Reik, Spotnitz, Eigen, and others. If you’re thinking about analytic training or are an experienced professional, this workshop
will deepen your understanding of what it means to be a psychoanalyst.
TUESDAYS: June 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd 5:30-7:00 PM $180
Jennifer Wade, LCSW, CGP, LP, is a Training Analyst and Fellow at CMPS and Chair of the Phyllis W. Meadow Award for Excellence in Psychoanalytic Writing. She treats individuals, couples, and groups in her Greenwich Village private practice.

UNTANGLING THE WEB OF COUPLES’ INTERACTIONS
Many of us have found couples notoriously difficult to work with. They enact a “stuck” place in the relationship that results from reciprocal early transferences to each other. This problem and helpful object-oriented techniques will be explained theoretically. There will be a live demonstration of how the analyst may slow down the fraught activity in the room and reduce the repetitive nature of the couple’s power struggle.
TUESDAY: June 29th 7:00-8:30 PM $45
Valerie Frankfeldt, PhD, LCSW, is a CMPS graduate. She is Director of Training, supervisor, faculty member, and training analyst at the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Study Center. Dr. Frankfeldt is a Certified Imago Relationship Therapist and maintains a private practice in individual, group, and couples therapy in the Village.

PROVIDING INDIVIDUAL TREATMENT IN GROUP SETTINGS
Both therapists and patients are sometimes reluctant to suggest group treatment because it is believed that there will be some loss of therapeutic benefit for the patient. This belief holds patients back from being exposed to the many valuable benefits of group. Through group discussion and
participation, the merits of group to the individual patient will be highlighted. These benefits will be compared to those of individual treatment.
WEDNESDAYS: June 2nd, 9th 7:00-8:30 PM $90
Gideon Freudenthal, PhD, is a CMPS graduate. He is a psychologist and clinical supervisor at Interfaith Medical Center and has extensive experience with group therapy. He is in private practice in New York City.

TREATMENT OF ADDICTIONS: ANALYSIS IN A 12- STEP WORLD
Modern psychoanalytic techniques for the treatment of narcissistic disorders evolved from early psychoanalytic parameters for the treatment of severe disorders including addiction. Clinicians such as Aichhorn, Anna Freud, Fenichel, and Ferenczi laid down the foundations for such treatment. This
workshop considers impulse disorders and options for managing them including outside therapeutic agents such as Alcoholics Anonymous and alternatives such as Harm Reduction. We will explore and discuss dynamic and behavioral aspects of addiction to increase awareness and effectiveness in the treatment setting.
WEDNESDAY: June 16th 5:30–7:00 PM $45
Steven D. Brown, LCSW, LP is a CMPS graduate. He is a psychoanalyst working with adults, children, and groups in NYC and Columbia County NY. He is currently completing research for his doctoral dissertation on the psychoanalytic treatment of addiction.

DRIVE THEORY AND NEUROSCIENCE
Neuroscientists are now able to watch the brain in action and analyze its chemistry. Their findings are giving credence to Freud and drive theory. This workshop explores how new brain science supports psychoanalytic concepts and why talking can facilitate helpful changes in brain structure and chemistry.
