June Workshops
Again this year the CMPS Extension Division presents mini-courses in psychoanalytic theory and technique that can be applied to a variety of settings and disciplines such as mental health, education, law, and the arts. These seminars will also be of interest to anyone considering enrolling in the CMPS Certificate Program, One-Year Program or Fridays for Educators Program. As always, seminars are open to the public and will be of special interest to individuals looking to begin or change career paths. This year our June courses are designed to complement each other and are scheduled so that individuals may take more than one. Four-week courses will be awarded six CE credits; twoweek course, three CE credits An educational film evening, Friday, June 16, will also be offered free of charge to June Workshop enrollees.
SUPERVISION: Difficult Cases and Situations
Workshop participants will experience how presenting cases in a group
setting can help you to achieve clarity and resolve difficult impasses. Clinical
cases, managerial or client issues and marital and family dynamics are
welcome. Observe how modern analysts work.

THE ANALYTIC FRAME: Rationale and Applications
In his “On Beginning the Treatment,” Freud (1912) outlines the conditions
under which treatment is to be conducted. This “frame” includes a fixed
appointment time, frequency of sessions, and fee. We will discuss the rationale
behind the “rules” and demonstrate how conflicts around punctuality,
regularity, and payment can be worked with—in treatment and everyday life.

FREUD’S CASE STUDIES: The Psychotic Dr. Schreber
This workshop offers a close reading of Freud’s 1911 study of an autobiographical
account of severe mental illness. Hospitalized three times with
paranoid, psychosexual, and religious delusions, Schreber had formerly
served as a judge in Dresden and had published his memoirs in 1903.
Course topics include the dynamics of paranoia, projection, narcissism,
delusions of world destruction, the fantasy of being turned into a woman,
and repressed homosexual desire for the father.

THE BATTLE WITHIN:
Unconscious Conflict, Anxiety, and Symptom Formation
Self-knowledge begins with a curiosity about one’s own internal life and
that of others. Workshop explores the origin of our internal conflicts, how
they are expressed, and how they may interfere with effective functioning.

LOST CASES: What We Can Learn from
Our Work with Patients Who Terminate Prematurely
Workshop focus is cases that terminate prematurely. In addition to reading
the literature on treatment impasses, we will learn from studying our clinical
“mistakes.” Participants are invited to present discontinued cases to examine
the interrelatedness of the conscious and unconscious dynamics of
patient and analyst. “Lost” cases provide us with wisdom about our work.
