An Evening of Dreams & Theater: Psychic Loss and Adopted Women

This unique research/theater event will present findings from Dr. Barbara D’Amato’s doctoral research study. Beginning with a presentation of the study’s major components, the stage will be set for dramatic readings of dream data and verbatim narratives provided by the research participants. This segment of the presentation will incorporate theatrical renditions by three professionally trained actresses , Heather Dean, Josie Oppenheim and Ana Perea* all of whom are known to the CMPS community. Sam Schacht has edited and will direct the material.

Barbara D’Amato, PsyaD, LP, has an interest in dream research and has written several articles on the connection between authors’ dreams and their literary work including “Jekyll and Hyde: A literary forerunner to Freud’s discovery of the unconscious.” She is a founding member of the Adoption Circle and is a faculty member at CMPS and NYGSP.

 

Sam Schacht, MA, teaches at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting and is a producer, theater academic, and former Dean of the Actors Studio Drama School at the New School University. He has appeared on Broadway, Off-Broadway, in films and television, and has started two successful and still active theater companies in New York City.

 

the Actresses:

Heather Dean moved to New York City in 1995 and attended the American Musical and Dramatic Academy certificate program for musical theater.  She has performed in numerous productions in the city and upstate New York in her hometown of Woodstock.  Ms. Dean graduated from The New School University in 2006 and is currently in her final semester of the Masters Program at NYGSP. 

Josie Oppenheim, MA, NCPysA, LP, a member of the Adoption Circle at CMPS has been a painter, writer, actress and stage director,  She has most recently appeared in performance pieces with street poet, Sparrow, at the West Bank Cafe and The Pink Pony . Her directorial  credits include  Osborn'es “Luther,” and Stravinski's “L'histoire Du Soldat” which was performed with the  League ISCM Chamber Players at Carnegie Recital Hall.  She was  Co-Founder and Director of the Stella Adler Conservatory Theater and developed a writing and acting curriculum at Bank Street's School for Children. Her latest foray into the arts is as a licensed psychoanalyst in NYC.

Ana Perea received her MFA in Acting at Columbia University.  Ana was named Best Actress of 2004 by John Heilpern of the New York Observer for her performance in The House of Bernarda Alba, directed by Karin Coonrod.  Ana's international appearances include The International Shakespeare Project in Recklinghausen, Germany, the 12th Annual Young Theater Festival in Seoul, Korea, and Premio Dams in Bologna, Italy.  Most recent NYC performances include Javier Gutierrez's Woyzeck at the Baryshnikov Arts Center and the world premiere of Carl Hancock Rux's Mycenaean at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.  Ana is currently pursuing her doctorate in Psychoanalysis.
